FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Charleston, SC — A 2024 inductee to the South Carolina Academy of Authors, William P. Baldwin presents a new generation of historians and birders with Birds of South Carolina, the pioneering ornithological work by Arthur Trezevant Wayne. This eagerly awaited reissue revives Wayne’s groundbreaking research, offering fresh insights and renewed appreciation for his contributions to ornithology. Baldwin’s expert introduction provides crucial context for Wayne’s life and work while introducing modern readers to the early ornithologist’s lasting legacy.

Originally published in the early 20th century, Birds of South Carolina catalogs the bird species of the region and solidifies Wayne’s status as one of the most influential birders of his time. Featuring illustrations by the iconic John James Audubon, Wayne’s text remains a cornerstone of Southern ornithology, with his meticulous fieldwork adding 45 species to the state’s bird list.

“During his 47-year career, which was virtually uninterrupted, Wayne added 45 species to the state list, published 125 scientific papers, wrote the first state bird book, and became recognized as the most eminent Southern ornithologist of his time.” — David Chamberlain
