William P. Baldwin Introduces Birds of South Carolina to a New Generation of Birders and Historians

Charleston, SC – A 2024 Inductee to the South Carolina Academy of Authors, William P. Baldwin presents a new generation of historians and birders with Birds of South Carolina, the pioneering ornithological work by Arthur Trezevant Wayne. This eagerly awaited reissue revives Wayne’s groundbreaking research, offering fresh insights and renewed appreciation for his contributions to ornithology. Baldwin’s expert introduction provides crucial context for Wayne’s life and work while introducing modern readers to the early ornithologist’s lasting legacy.

Originally published in the early 20th century, Birds of South Carolina catalogs the bird species of the region and solidifies Wayne’s status as one of the most influential birders of his time. Featuring illustrations by the iconic John James Audubon, Wayne’s text remains a cornerstone of Southern ornithology, with his meticulous fieldwork adding 45 species to the state’s bird list. This new edition offers a chance to explore the ultimate guide to the region’s birds, blending Wayne’s original brilliance with Baldwin’s expert lens.

The reissued volumes include Baldwin’s introduction, which examines Wayne’s relationship with Audubon and emphasizes his contributions to bird conservation. Wayne’s observations, which remain poignant today, provide crucial context for understanding the current state of bird populations in South Carolina and beyond.

Publishing February 4, 2025, Birds of South Carolina (Books 1 and 2) is available for order now. The book is a vital resource for bird enthusiasts, scientists, and those interested in South Carolina’s natural history.

About the Author:

Arthur Trezevant Wayne (1864–1930) was an American ornithologist known for his work in South Carolina. He was instrumental in the rediscovery of several bird species, including Swainson’s warbler and Bachman’s warbler. Wayne’s Black-throated Green Warbler, a subspecies of Setophaga virens, is named in his honor.

“During his 47-year career, which was virtually uninterrupted, Wayne added 45 species to the state list, published 125 scientific papers, wrote the first state bird book, and became recognized as the most eminent Southern ornithologist of his time.”
